Stand Up 2 Cancer: 5 Ways to Lower Your Risk of Cancer

Cancer rates may be declining slowly, but deaths from certain types of cancer are still on the rise, and more than 1,500 people in the United States still die from it every day. Stand Up 2 Cancer is determined to accelerate and innovate cancer research, so that patients can have access to new treatments quickly, and scientists can find a cure. Their telethon tonight (8 p.m. ET, on Yahoo.com and elsewhere) is dedicated to raising money and awareness for the fight against cancers of all kinds.

"This broadcast has become a global call-to-action for all those touched by cancer," Gwyneth Paltrow, who is one of the telethon's executive producers, said in a statement. "Like so many people, I know what it's like to lose a family member to this disease, and I'm honored to stand up in my father's memory."

Since 2008, the organization has given out $109 million to fund hundreds of scientists working toward finding a cure for cancer. (Their funding is administered by the American Association for Cancer Research; you can donate at StandUp2Cancer.org) Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Justin Timberlake, Sofia Vergara, Gabrielle Douglas, Matt Damon, Julia Roberts, Coldplay, Alicia Keys and other recording artists and celebrities will perform during tonight's telethon.

"We now understand the very biology that drives cancer," the organization points out on its website. "With knowledge gained from the mapping of the human genome, we can target the genes and pathways that are involved in turning normal cells into cancerous ones. We are on the brink of possessing a toolbox full of new, advanced therapies just waiting to be adapted to benefit patients."

According to the World Health Organization, at least one-third of all cancer cases are preventable. Here are five easy steps you can take to lower your own risk of cancer:

Use sun protection. Skin cancer accounts for nearly half of all cancer cases in the United States -- more than 2 million cases a year, The American Cancer Society notes. While a little bit of sun exposure helps your body produce vitamin D, too much exposure can quickly lead to melanomas and worse -- even for people with darker skin. Slathering on sunscreen (you should use about a shot-glass's worth to cover your whole body) whenever you're outdoors can help protect your skin from damage and reduce your risk of skin cancer.

Watch what you eat
. A new study shows that organic food is not more nutritious than conventional food, but organic options can lower your exposure to some cancer-causing pesticides. (The "Dirty Dozen" and the "Clean 15" lists can help you decide when buying organic does or doesn't make sense.) And certain foods -- blueberries, kiwis, cantaloupe, garlic, green tea, and fatty fish, among others -- are high in compounds that can help protect against different types of cancers. Also: Drinking plenty of water can help cut your risk of bladder cancer, and reducing your alcohol intake (especially if you're male) can reduce your risk of mouth and oropharynx cancer.

Don't smoke or chew tobacco. "Using any type of tobacco puts you on a collision course with cancer," the experts at the Mayo Clinic warn. Smoking has been linked to lung cancer, of course, but also to cancers of the bladder, cervix, stomach, larynx, esophagus, and kidneys. Chewing tobacco has been linked to oral cancers and cancer of the pancreas. (Want to quit smoking? Yahoo! Shine has some tips.)

Watch your weight. If you're overweight, losing just a couple of pounds can help reduce your risk of several types of cancer. A recent study by Dr. Anne McTiernan at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle found that overweight, post-menopausal women who exercised moderately for just three hours a week were able to drop enough weight to lower the levels of circulating estrogen in their bodies which, in turn, lowered their risk for developing estrogen-sensitive breast cancers.

Get screened regularly.
Catching cancer early can be the key to successful treatment, so it's important for men and women to stay on top of routine screenings. Guidelines for mammograms and pap smears have changed in recent years. And the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend that both girls and boys get the HPV vaccine to protect against contracting or transmitting the virus that can cause cervical cancer.

How to recognise a heart attack

Unhealthy lifestyles combined with a ton of stress are making more and more people vulnerable to heart attacks. Here’s a low-down on signs and symptoms of a heart attack.Often people expect a heart attack to be dramatic like it is in the movies. But in reality — most often — that is not the case. This article thus spells out the signs and symptoms of a heart attack.

What happens during a heart attack?

During a heart attack, the blood flow to the heart muscle is either reduced or completely stops. This typically happens because of a blood clot that is blocking an artery.
When the heart muscle does not get oxygen-rich blood, it ceases to work.

Some common heart attack symptoms:

  • A heart attack often causes chest pain.
  • There is a feeling of fullness or a clasping pain in the centre of the chest. Most victims describe the pain as akin to an elephant standing on the chest (extreme pain). It usually lasts for about 15 minutes.
  • One also experiences shooting pain in the shoulders, neck, arm, back and sometimes even the teeth and jaw.
  • One finds increasing episodes of chest pain.
  • Prolonged pain in the upper abdomen.
  • Shortness of breath.
  • The victim might experience heavy sweating.
  • Since the heart’s pumping action is severely impaired during a severe heart attack, the victim might lose his/her consciousness.
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • In rare cases, as in patients who are diabetic, the heart attack may not be very painful, and sometimes can even be entirely painless.

Other heart attack symptoms

The elderly, diabetics, people on steroids as well as women are less likely to have obvious symptoms like severe chest pain (as often seen in men). These are some symptoms they are likely to have:
  • Pain in the abdomen
  • Heart burn
  • Sweaty skin
  • Unusual tiredness
  • Dizziness or light-headedness
  • Nausea
  • Tightness or pain in the neck, shoulder or upper back

Heart attack symptoms are not the same for all…

Not everyone who has a heart attack has the same symptoms. Many a time, we also tend to ignore a heart attack thinking it might be mere abdominal discomfort due to gas pains or indigestion. If you have more than a few symptoms listed above, then you are likely to be having an attack. Get emergency help immediately.

What to do in case of a heart attack?

  • Rush to a hospital: If you recognise that you or someone around is having a heart attack, get immediate medical help.
  • Give Disprin (Asprin): As soon as you recognise it is an attack, crush a disprin, dissolve it in water and make the person drink it.
  • Emergency numbers: Every office and home must keep a list of emergency numbers like that of an ambulance service, hospital.

A heart attack is different from a cardiac arrest

Do not confuse a heart attack with cardiac arrest. In the case of a cardiac arrest, the heart suddenly stops. It occurs due to an electrical disturbance that obstructs the heart’s pumping function, which results in stopping blood flow to the rest of the body.

Five Tips To maintain A Good Health

It is rightly said that “a healthy mind resides in a healthy body”. You need to understand that your body is also an important part of you just like your mind. Therefore, it is quite important that you understand what your body wants and know when you require medical attention for maintaining a good health. You should not neglect your health at any circumstance.

Here are 5 tips that will help you to maintain a good health:

1. Always think positively

If you wake up in a bad mood, then your stress level hormones get elevated even before you start your day. It makes you more vulnerable to the germs you are exposed all day long. Therefore, you need think positively and try not to pay heed to the negative thoughts that come to your mind. It will help you to stay happy and healthy.

2. Avoid crash diet to reduce weight

Many of you start crash dieting in order to lose weights quickly. However, the scariest part of crash dieting is that you don’t lose weight in the long run. When you continue crash dieting, your body actually exhausts the supply of glycogen, which is a type of carbohydrate. As a result, your body looses water, which gets reflected when you step on the scale. There are a number of health risks associated with crash dieting; therefore, avoid crash dieting to shed extra pounds. Instead, reduce your weight under medical supervision.

3. Drink plenty of water

Do you know that water makes up more than 50% of a human body? Therefore, your body will not be able to function if there is not sufficient level of water in it. You should drink at least 6-8 glasses of water every day as it helps to flush out toxins from your body. You can also eat certain foods that help to maintain the adequate water level in your body, which helps you to stay healthy.

4. Take a break from regular work

It is quite important to take breaks from your work at regular intervals to maintain good health. Instead of stressing yourself, you should take some rest whenever you feel tired. If you take a break from your work, then it’ll help you to achieve greater success. Researches reveal that chronic work stress can result into increased blood pressure. You’ll be astonished to know that your work stress can even increase your weight. Yes, it’s true. Therefore, take a break from work and exercise for a few minutes, which will help you to reduce your work related stress to some extent.

5. Exercise regularly

If you exercise, then it will help to keep your stress level hormones under control, which in turn will help to strengthen your immunity. Exercise also helps to prevent a number of diseases; as for example, you’ll be able to prevent certain cancers, osteoporosis and you’re also less likely to develop cardiovascular diseases if you exercise regularly. However, everyone does not need the same kind of exercise. You should visit a doctor to know how much exercise you need. Moreover, you need to consult a doctor before you start a specific exercise; not every exercise is meant for everyone.

Apart from the above factors, you should also go for regular health check-ups in order to maintain a good health.

HOME REMEDIES FOR HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE

As the heart pumps blood to various parts of the body, the force of blood flow puts pressure on the arterial walls. High blood pressure or hypertension can cause irreversible damage to your heart, kidneys, blood vessels, and other parts of the body.

If you monitor your blood pressure regularly, you can manage your high blood pressure through medication and lifestyle changes. However, left untreated, high blood pressure may result in adverse health effects.

Dining with friends can make you fat

Dining with a friend could be bad for those on a diet - it tempts you into eating unhealthy dishes from the menu, just to keep him or her in good humour, says a study.

Researchers led by Eric Robinson, psychologist at the University of Birmingham, believe it may help to explain why groups of friends often put on weight at the same time and why some women complain that they get heavier when they find a boyfriend - they start to copy his eating habits.

"There is a lot of evidence that points towards this idea that your friends make you fat. If you have got friends or people you know who have put on weight recently, then you will put on weight too," said Robinson.

"We found that pairing people with unhealthy eating partners reduced the amount of healthy food they were eating. They tended to pick the foods that were high in calories," added Robinson, the British Journal of Nutrition reported.

"Recognising that this effect is real could help people who are trying to watch what they eat. They could even look at a menu and try to decide what they are eating before those they are with to help avoid being influenced," the Telegraph quoting Robinson, said.

The research asked 100 female volunteers to select from a choice of food consisting of healthy fruit and vegetables or unhealthy foods including crisps, pastries and cocktail sausages.

They found that when they were eating with someone who had been asked to pick unhealthy options, the volunteers also picked far more of these compared to when they ate alone or with someone who chose healthier foods.

Suzanne Higgs, reader in the psychobiology of appetite and study co-author, added: "This research underlines the social nature of eating and how this influences our behaviour."

Working more than 8hrs a day ups heart risk

Working more than eight hours a day raises the risk of heart disease by up to 80 per cent, a new study has revealed.

Researchers said that long working hours could be condemning thousands of employees to heart attacks and strokes.

The warning follows analysis of 12 studies dating back as far as 1958, involving a total of 22,000 people from around the world.

The analysis, by scientists at the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health, found that those whose working days that were longer than the traditional eight hours had a 40 to 80 per cent greater chance of heart disease.

The size of the increase varied depending on how each study was carried out.

The effects were more pronounced when participants were asked how long they worked for - but when researchers closely monitored working hours, the increased risk of heart disease was closer to 40 per cent.

Lead researcher Dr Marianna Virtanen said the effects could be due to "prolonged exposure to stress."

Other triggers could be poor eating habits and lack of exercise due to restricted leisure time.

Middle-aged workers putting in 55 hours or more a week had poorer brain function than those clocking up no more than 40 hours, with lower scores on tests to measure intelligence, short-term memory and word recall.

Britons work some of the longest hours in Europe, with full-time employees averaging 42.7 a week.

Those in Germany typically work for 42 hours, while Danes do 39.1.

It estimated that more than five million people a year in Britain work unpaid extra hours to hang on to their jobs.

But the long-term toll on workers' health could be devastating, the new research suggests.

"There are several potential mechanisms that may underlie the association between long working hours and heart disease," the Daily Mail quoted Dr Virtanen as saying in a report on the findings.

In addition to prolonged exposure to psychological stress, she said other triggers could be raised levels of the stress hormone cortisol, poor eating habits and lack of physical activity due to restricted leisure time.

Health Benefits of Water

Incredible as it may seem, water is quite possibly the single most important catalyst in losing weight and keeping it off. Although most of us take for granted, water may be the only true "magic potion" for permanent weight loss.

Water supresses the appetite naturally and helps the body metabolize stored fat. Studies have shown that a decrease in water intake will cause fat deposits to increase, while an increase in water intake can actually reduce fat deposits.
Here's why: The kidneys can't function properly without enough water. When they don't work to capacity, some of their load is dumped onto the liver. One of the liver's primary functions is to metabolize stored fat into usable energy for the body. But if the liver has to do some of the kidney's work it can't operate at full throttle. As a result, it metabolizes less fat more fat remains stored in the body and weight loss stops.

Drinking enough water is the best treatment for fluid retention. When the body gets less water,it perceives this as a threat to survival and begins to hold on to every drop. Water is stored in extracellular spaces (outside the cell). This shows up as swollen feet, legs and hands.

Diuretics offer a temporary solution at best. They force out stored water along with some essential nutrients. Again, the body perceives a treat and will replace the lost water at the first opportunity. Thus, the condition quickly returns.

The best way to overcome the problem of water retention is to give your body what it needs -- plenty of water. Only then will stored water be released.

If you have a constant problem with water retention, excess salt may be to blame. Your body will tolerate sodium only in a certain concentration. The more salt you eat the more water your system retains to dilute it.

But getting rid of unneeded salt is easy -- just drink more water. As it's forced through the kidneys it takes away excess sodium.

The overweight person needs more water than a thin one. Larger people have larger metabolic loads. Since we know that water is the key to fat metabolism, it follows that the over weight person needs more water.
